PhD
Taxonomic and faunistic study of the palearctic scuttle fly genera (Diptera: Phoridae) (in Hungarian)
Short summary:
In my PhD a new key was improved for the genera known from Palearctic region. It was important that the key be as simple as possible to use, so easily recognizable characters were always used when possible. The 45 Palearctic genera were run to 54 couplets/triplets. The key is illustrated mainly with my own drawings. The diagnosis of each Palearctic genera were given and unified, to allow easy comparisons. Additional data were given to each genera: type species information, references to the important literature, number of the Palearctic species, and the serial number of the couplet/triplet in the new key to Palearctic genera. An up-to-date checklist of the species known from Palearctis is compiled without the species of the paraphyletic Megaselia. Comparing to the earlier known 215 species, now 327 species occur certainly in the Palearctic region. Five genera were studied taxonomically (Phalacrotophora, Microselia, Peromitra, Abaristophora, Rhynchomicropteron). Four species (Abaristophora (Antipodiphora) hirticornis Lengyel & Papp sp. n.; Phalacrotophora nitidifrons Lengyel, 2011; Ph. pappi Lengyel, 2011; Rhynchomicropteron kuslitzkyi Lengyel, 2011) are described as new, among them the first Palearctic species in the genus Rhynchomicropteron. Previously unknown or superficially known males/females were described in case of other four species (- Microselia rivierae, Peromitra cephalotes, Phalacrotophora pictofasciata, Ph. spectabilis). 71 illustrations were made, with 44 already published (Lengyel 2009a, 2009b, 2011a, 2011b). Faunistic results include seven species new to Hungary (Diplonevra oldenbergi, Gymnophora perpropinqua, Peromitra agilis, Phalacrotophora pictofasciata, Ph. spectabilis, Pseudacteon brevicauda, P. fennicus), five new to Israel (Gymnophora arcuata, Microselia rivierae, Metopina heselhausi, Peromitra cephalotes, P. erythrocera;), three new to North-Korea (Diplonevra peregrina, D. taigaensis, Peromitra agilis) and one new to China (Phalacrotophora fasciata). There are new data for rare species as well.
The PhD work is a manuscript, therfore it is not equivalent with a publication (i.e. do not cite it). If you would like to use my results please contact me at lengyelgabor{a}gmail.com.

Abstract – One peculiar species each of the genera Abaristophora Schmitz and Postoptica Disney are described from Vietnam. Abaristophora hirticornis is a new species that possesses special appendages on each side of the metathorax, which is unique among the species of Phoridae. The discovery of the second species of the reduced winged genus Postoptica, P. continentalis, new species, in the continental Asia suggests a broader distribution of the genus in the Oriental region. A checklist of Abaristophora with distribution of the described species and a key for the males of Postoptica is given.
Abstract – The first Palearctic species of the genus Rhynchomicropteron Annandale, 1912, R. kuslitzkyi sp. n., is described from Israel. Another five species of Phoridae (Gymnophora arcuata (Meigen, 1830), Metopina heselhausi Schmitz, 1914, Microselia rivierae Schmitz, 1934, Peromitra cephalotes (Schmitz, 1922), Peromitra erythrocera (Meigen, 1830)) are recorded as new to the fauna of Israel. The previously unknown male of Microselia rivierae is described, diagnostic characters of males of the genus Microselia Schmitz, 1934 are discussed.
Abstract – Two new species of Phalacrotophora Enderlein, 1912, P. nitida sp. n. and P. pappi sp. n. are described from Southeast Asia. Their affinities are discussed, the present knowledge on the genus is summarized. Faunistic records of various Phalacrotophora species are presented; P. fasciata (Fallén, 1823), so far only known from Europe, is reported from Asia for the first time.
Abstract –
Abstract – The unknown male of Phalacrotophora spectabilis Schmitz, 1925 and the unknown female of Phalacrotophora pictofasciata Schmitz, 1919 are described. New data on the Hungarian Phalacrotophora species are given. P. pictofasciata and P. spectabilis are new to the fauna of Hungary. A revised key with figures for the European species is presented.
Abstract – Three Phoridae species are reported as new to Hungary. Three other interesting records are discussed. The unknown female of Peromitra cephalotes Schmitz, 1922 is described. With 2 figures.

Abstract – New data on the distribution of Ischyropsalis hellwigii (PANZER, 1794), Paranemastoma quadripunctatum (PERTY, 1833) and Trogulus tingiformis C. L. The occurrence of Opilio dinaricus ŠILHAVÝ, 1938 is confirmed, and the adventive O. canestrinii (THORELL, 1876) is recorded for the first time from Hungary. With 3 figures.

Abstract – During two expeditions in 2004 and 2007 in the mountains of Western Romania, were collected 43 landsnail and 13 harvestman species. Most important ones among them are the snail Orcula jetschini (M. von Kimakowicz, 1883) and the harvestman Opilio dinaricus Šilhavý, 1938. Some further specimens have an unclear taxonomic position and should be revised in the future. These are Nemastoma cf. transsylvanicum Gruber & Martens, 1968, Gyas titanus Simon, 1879, Drobatia moetica Wenz, 1926 and Ruthenica gallinae (Bielz, 1861). A list of the harvestman species known from the region is added.
